Description

Folios 312-313: Keith Maxwell, HMS Hound, Deptford. Reply to letter dated 9 May 1803 requesting he state the cases of nine men:- David Davis, William Knight, John Acres, James Bartholomew, William Griffiths, John Hillier, William Smith, Thomas Robbins & Edward Kelsey. He reports on the nine men named coming under the Denomination of Water Fencibles and state that yesterday in Regulating the men, for a miscausly procured from the General Impress of Saturday Mr Colgate [Colegate] Commanding Officer of that corps, having come forward, in a Respectable Uniform, representing the situation of the men in question, and the utility of them and their Corps were of His Majesty's Service. He took the liberty of dismissing them taking the precaution, as a preliminary, article to this step, (should their Lordships Disapprove of the measure) that the said men should still be forthcoming, and liable to be produced, to serve His Majesty at Sea if required; Testing the propriety of this conduct on the Respectability of Captain Colgate's [Colegate's] situation.
