Folios 233-234: Robert Montagu, HMS Sampson, Spithead. Reports that he proceeded with HMS Sampson and HMS Argo and took under convoy the Duke of Buccleigh, East Indiaman. Advises that before leaving St. Helens, Captain William Clark informed him that the Master and Gunner of HMS Argo were left at sick quarters, and in consequence, he gave acting orders to David Ferrie as Master and to James Fairburne as Gunner. Advises that on 14 April he anchored at St. Jago and then sailed to St. Helena arriving on 17 June, where he fell in with HMS Lion who had under convoy India ships from China. Advises that on communicating his orders to Sir Erasmus Gower, he thought it proper to take both HM ships under his command. Advises that having parted company with HMS Lion, when in chase in the Channel, and having with him HMS Assistance, he fell in with two India convoy ships, the Osterley and the Triton, both in distress. Advises that he dispatched HMS Assistance to accompany the Triton to Torbay and brought the Osterley with him to Spithead.
