Prisoner name: David Shiels.

Court and Date of Trial: Edinburgh Sheriff's Court, Edinburghshire, 6 September 1848.

Crime: Not stated.

Initial sentence: 40 days imprisonment and to find surety to keep the peace or suffer a further twenty days imprisonment.

Outcome: 'Nil'.

Petitions and letters: Petition from Hugh McCulloch (known to the prisoner) with a folio of 17 signatures affixed and with a surgeon's certificate of delirium tremens also affixed; letter from Hugh McCulloch transmitting his petition to the Home Office; letter from [Lord Grey] forwarding the papers from Downing Street [London] to the Home Office.
