Description

Folios: 476v-477. Honor of Bolyngbrok [Bolingbroke], in one box, marked by the letter K. Grant.

First party: Henry I.

Second party: Ranulf, earl of Chester [Ranulf le Meschin].

Place or subject: All of the earl's inheritance of Normandy and England, as well and freely as any of his ancestors ever held it, namely the castle of Vira and Barbifluvium [Barfleur], with such liberty that he can take throughout the whole banlieu as his forfeiture [further details given], and whatever the king had given to him in Abrinchein, except for the bishopric and the abbey of Monte St Michaelis [Mont St Michel], and what pertains to them. Also the whole honor of Roger, earl of Poitou, and the whole of the king's honor of Blie, wherever it is in England; and the whole honor of Eia [Eye], as well and fully as Robert Malet, uncle of Ranulf's mother, ever held it. Also Staford [Stafford] and Stafordiesir [Staffordshire] and the county of Stafordie [Stafford], whatever the king had there in fee and inheritance, excepting the fee of the bishop of Chester and of Earl Robert de Ferrers and Hugh de Mortimer, and Gervase Pag', and excepting the forest of Canoc [Cannock], which the king retains in his hands. And the fee of Alan de Lincol' [Lincoln], which was of the uncle of Ranulf's mother, and the fee of Ernise de Burn' as his inheritance, and the fee of Hugh de Scoteineio, wherever it may be; and the fee of Robert de Chalz, wherever it may be; and the whole fee of Robert son of Odo; and the whole fee of Norman de Verd' [Verdun]; and the fee of Robert de Staf', wherever it may be. And £30 worth of land which the king had in Grimesbeia [Grimsby], and the castle and borough of Notingeham [Nottingham], and whatever the king had in Nottingham in fee and inheritance. Also the whole fee of William Peverell, wherever it may be, unless he can be deraigned in the king's court, excepting Hecham. And if Ingram de Albamarl [Aumale] does not want to take himself with the king or Earl Simon, and the king can take it by force, the king is handing Hecham over to Earl Ranulf, if he wants to have it. And Torcheseiam [Torksey] and Oswardebec [Oswaldbeck] wapentake and Derbeiam [Derby], with all appurtenances, and Maunnesfeld [Mansfield] with the soke, and Roclay with the soke, and Stanleiam by Coventreiam, with the soke.
