Description

Folios: 467v-468. Honor of Bolyngbrok [Bolingbroke], in one box, marked by the letter I. Agreement.

First party: Robert de Foterbi [Fotherby], living in Lud [Louth].

Second party: Geoffrey, son of Eudo de Grisseby [Girsby].

Place or subject: Robert demised to Geoffrey and his heirs or assigns the whole of his land in the vill and territory of Burg [Burgh] with the houses built there, excepting the dower of Rose, late wife of Gilbert de Burg [Burgh], which land Robert bought from Geoffrey, son of Stephen de Burgo [Burgh], just as his charter bears witness. Geoffrey, son of Eudo and his heirs or assigns are to leave these houses at the end of the term to Robert and his heirs by the view of law-worthy men in the same state as they received and entered at the beginning of his agreement. It will not be lawful for Geoffey or his heirs or assigns to pull out, uproot, destroy or remove trees planted within the court without Robert's licence, and Geoffrey binds himself to this under pain of half a mark to be paid to Robert or his heirs. To hold to Geoffrey and his heirs or assigns of Robert and his heirs freely, quietly, well and in peace, paying 10s yearly to Robert and his heirs at two terms, namely 5s at Pentecost and 5s at Martinmas, for all service, suit and custom, from the term of Martinmas until the end of six years following, of which Geoffrey will receive the first crop in the year 1253. Once those six years are finished and six crops have been received, this land will revert [to Robert] without fraud of Geoffrey or his heirs.

County: [Lincolnshire].

Additional people: Witnesses: Roger the chaplain; John the clerk of Burgo [Burgh]; Gilbert the reeve of Grisseby [Girsby]; Ralph, son of Maud de Burgo [Burgh]; Richard the clerk of Lud [Louth]; Walter de Seys; Adam de Linc' [Lincoln]; and John the clerk.

The feast of St Martin in Winter, 1252.
