Description

Folios: 372v-373. Honor of Bolyngbrok [Bolingbroke], in one box, marked by the letter D. Obligation.

First party: Master John Galle of Salfletby [Saltfleetby].

Second party: Ranulf Russell and Maud, his wife, of the same vill.

Place or subject: John has bound himself and is held to pay yearly to Ranulf and Maud, or one of them, three quarters of wheat and one quarter of beans during their lives, to be paid at these terms, namely at the feast of St Nicholas one quarter of wheat, one quarter of beans at the Purification of the Blessed Virgin, one quarter of wheat at Easter, and one quarter of wheat at the feast of St Botolph, at John's hall at Salfletby [Saltfleetby], to be received out of the wheat of that vill at those terms, and to the same Ranulf during his whole life and that of John one cloth a year to Ranulf's use and John's honour. If Maud dies before Ranulf, he is to receive all those quarters from John and his heirs both of wheat and also of beans during the whole of his life at those terms without any opposition from John or his heirs, for ten acres of land with appurtenances lying in the vill of Salfletby [Saltfleetby], namely those which Ranulf gave to John by charter. And if it happens that John or his heirs default in the payment, Ranulf and Maud can distrain him and retain the distraints until they have been fully satisfied of the wheat and beans. If Maud is still alive after Ranulf's death, John grants her the whole toft and croft where Ranulf lives, with the houses built thereon, to hold during her life for 18d to be paid to John and his heirs yearly at four terms appointed in the soke of Gaython [Gayton le Wold].
