Place or subject: The king grants to Robert, John and John licence so that they can grant, hand over, demise and confirm to John, duke of Lancaster, the king's son [John of Gaunt], and Blanche, his wife, the castle, manor and honor of Bolyngbrok [Bolingbroke], the manor of Sutton in Holand [Long Sutton] and all other manors, lands, tenements, rents, services, reversions, fees, advowsons, bailiwicks, offices and possessions with all liberties, profits, commodities and other appurtenances, which Robert, John and John had jointly or in any other way from the gift and grant of Henry, late duke of Lancaster [Henry of Grosmont]. To hold to John and Blanche and their heirs in tail of the king and his heirs and other chief lords of those fees by the services due and accustomed forever, paying yearly to Robert, John and John and their heirs forever 1,000 marks at Easter and Michaelmas in equal portions, under certain conditions. If this rent of 1,000 marks is in arrears at any of these terms, then it will be lawful for Robert, John and John and their heirs to distrain in the castle, manors, lands and tenements and to retain the distraints until they have been satisfied of that rent and arrears. If it happens that Duke John and Blanche die without heirs in tail, then the premises are to remain to the right heirs of Duke Henry.
