Description

Folios: 231-231v. Honor of Bolyngbrok [Bolingbroke], in one box, marked by the letter A. Licence.

First party: Edward III.

Second party: John, bishop of Lincoln [John Buckingham], Richard [fitz Alan], earl of Arundel, Robert de la Mare, John de Bukland [Buckland], John Charnels, Walter Power, Simon Symeon and John Neumarche.

Place or subject: The king grants to the bishop and the others licence so that they can give and grant to John, earl of Lancaster and Richemond [Richmond], the king's son [John of Gaunt], and Blanche, his wife, daughter and one of the heirs of Henry, late duke of Lancaster [Henry of Grosmont], the castle of Bolyngbrok [Bolingbroke] with the park and knights' fees and advowsons of churches, abbeys, priories, hospitals and other religious houses pertaining to the castle and soke of Bolingbroke, the manor, vill and soke of Bolingbroke and the manors of Sutton [Long Sutton], Thoresby, Wathe [Waithe] and Ingoldemeles [Ingoldmells], Lincolnshire, only excepted; and also the castle, vill, manor and honor of Tuttebury [Tutbury] with appurtenances, the vills of Screpton [Scropton], Merchynton [Marchington], Chalangewod [Callingwood], Uttexhatre [Uttoxeter], Adgarest [Agardsley] and Neuburgh [Newborough], and the hundred of Hegham Ferers [Higham Ferrers] and the manors of Higham Ferrers, Raundes [Raunds] and Rissheden [Rushden], and the vills of Brasyngton [Brassington], Matlok [Matlock] and Hertyngdon [Hartington] with appurtenances, which are held of the king in chief. To hold to John and Blanche and their heirs in tail by the services due and accustomed forever. If the earl and Blanche die without heirs in tail, then all the premises, except those things before excepted, are to remain to right heirs of the same duke after their death.
