Second party: The knights, freemen and all other tenants of the castle, vill and honor of Hertford and the vills of Beyford [Bayford], Esendon [Essendon] and Hertfordyngbury [Hertingfordbury].
Place or subject: Whereas the king by his letters patent granted to John, king of Castile and Leon, his son [John of Gaunt], these castle, vills and honor, to hold to him and his heirs in tail male, together with members, knights' fees, advowsons of churches, liberties, issues, profits, emoluments and appurtenances, of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed forever, in such a way that, if John dies without heirs in tail male, then after his death the premises are to revert to the king and his heirs, the king commands these knights, freemen and tenants to be attendant and answerable to John as if to a lord and to his heirs male, in rents, services and all other things, which pertain to the castle, vills and honor.
