Place or subject: The king has assigned and appointed Thomas, Richard, Walter and William, jointly or separately, to deliver in his name full and peaceful seisin to John, king of Castile and Leon, duke of Lancaster, his son [John of Gaunt], of the castle, vill and honor of Hertford and the vills of Beyford [Bayford], Esendon [Essendon] and Hertfordyngbury [Hertingfordbury], together with members, knights' fee, advowsons of churches, liberties, issues, profits, emoluments and all other things pertaining to them. To hold to John, the king's son, and his heirs in tail male of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed forever. If John dies without heirs male, then after his death the premises are to entirely revert to the king and his heirs.
