Description

Folio: 228. Hertfordshire and Essex. Writ.

First party: Edward III.

Second party: The knights, freemen and all other tenants of the castle, vill and honor of Hertford and the vills of Beyford [Bayford], Esendon [Essendon] and Hertfordyngbury [Hertingfordbury], together with members and appurtenances.

Place or subject: Whereas the king, on account that John, earl of Richemond [Richmond], his son [John of Gaunt], did not yet have castles, houses or other buildings where he could lodge or decently live according to his status, granted him these castle, vills and honors by his letters patent, together with members and all appurtenances which Isabella, late queen of England, the king's mother, held while she was alive, and which after her death passed into the king's hands, to hold to John with the issues and emoluments belonging to them in any way, as fully and entirely as the king's mother held them while she was alive, until suitable provision could be made to him as regards houses and other buildings elsewhere suitable for his stay, without paying to the king anything, just as is more fully contained in the letters. The king commands the knights, freemen and tenants to be attendant and answerable to John or to Geoffrey Foliaumbe, steward of his lands, or to John de Wentbrigg' [Wentbridge], lieutenant of the steward, for their fealties, rents and services.
