Description

Folios: 225v-226. Norfolk. Inspeximus of a charter, which Robert, count of Meulan and earl of Leicester, made to the church of the Apostles St Peter and St Paul of Pratell' and the monks there.

Place or subject: For the salvation of Robert's soul and that of King William, his lord, and the souls of his ancestors, Robert granted to the church of the Apostles St Peter and Paul of Pratell' [Préaux] and the monks there his manor of Toftes [Toft Monks] with appurtenances, namely lands, groves, marshes, meadows, turbaries, men, rents, pastures, commons and appurtenances, as freely as King William gave it to Robert. To hold to the monks and their successors in free, pure and perpetual alms well and in peace, honourably and justly, quit from suits of hundred courts, pleas, complaints, customs and all royal demands with soke, sac, 'thol, thif, infongenethef and utfongenethef', and with free warren in the parishes of Toftes [Toft Monks], Hadesco [Haddiscoe] and Thorp [Haddiscoe Thorpe] with all other liberties. Robert has also added to this gift the rights of patronages of the churches of St Margaret of that vill, St Mary of Haddiscoe, St Michael of Eston [Aston], St Leonard of Wileya, St Mary of Spectebury [Spettisbury], St Michael of Cherlinton [Charlton] and St Nicholas of Neubiry [Newbury], with tithes, obventions and pensions pertaining to those churches. In addition, in the vill Newbury the tithe of the whole rent or issue of the vill, i.e. from mills from toll and everything which can be tithed in the future, with one hide of land free from all rent and custom, suit of court and all secular service, all of which Ernulf de Hesdin, count of Perche, lord of Newbury, gave to Robert to the uses of alms of the monks. Robert also gave to the monks the small vill called Orlauescote [Arlescote] and five hides of land pertaining to it, free and abolsute from suits of hundred-courts, pleas, complaints, aids, customs, secular services and all demands and exactions. He also gave to them another manor by the name of Spettisbury with the whole vill, lands, groves, meadows, pastures, banks, mills, men, their services, chevages, rents and all things belonging to the manor and vill, free and absolute from suits of hundred-courts, pleas, complaints, aids, customs, secular services and all royal forced service with soke, sack, 'thol, thif, infongenethef' with all other liberties.
