Place or subject: Whereas John de Warenne, earl of Surrey, the king's kinsman, a long time ago granted by his deed to Ralph de Cobham the manor and vill of Thesford [Thetford] with appurtenances, which are held of the king in chief, together with knights' fees, advowsons of churches, abbeys, priories, chapels and hospitals, hundreds, views of frankpledge, fairs, markets, tolls, passages, pontages, fisheries, common pastures, liberties and free customs and all other things appurtenant without any reservation, to hold to Ralph for the whole of his life, and whereas afterwards, by fine levied in the king's court before the justices of the Bench, the earl granted that the manor and vill with all appurtenances. after Ralph's death, should remain to Thomas, late earl of Lancaster, and his heirs, to hold of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed forever, which same manor and vill after Ralph's death ought to remain to the king and his heirs by the forfeiture of the earl of Lancaster, and whereas Ralph handed over the premises into the king's hands, now, for the good service which Ralph has done to the king up to this point and will do in future, the king has granted him that manor and vill with appurtenances. To hold to Ralph and his heirs in tail male as freely and entirely as he previously held them from the grant of the earl of Surrey of the king and his heirs by those services forever. If Ralph dies without heirs in tail, then the premises are to revert to the king and his heirs.
