Description

Folio: 222. Kent. Writ.

First party: Edward III.

Second party: The freemen and all other tenants of the castle and lowy of Pevenese [Pevensey] and the manors of Wilyngdon [Willingdon] and Marsfeld [Maresfield], and also the bailiwick of Edelenewyk [Endlewick] and the free chase of Asshedon [Ashdown], tenants by knight service only excepted.

Place or subject: Whereas amongst other castles, manors, honors, hundreds, lands and tenements which the king granted to his son, John, king of Castile and Leon and duke of Lancaster [John of Gaunt], by his charter, indented, to have to John and his heirs in tail in exchange for the earldom of Richemond [Richmond] and the honor, castles, manors, lands, tenements and other places pertaining to that earldom, the king granted him the castle and lowy of Pevensey, the manors of Wylyngdon [Willingdon], Marsfeld [Maresfield], the bailiwick and chase with members, hamlets, meadows, pastures, fisheries, moors, marshes, turbaries, chases, parks, woods, warrens, hundreds, wapentakes, fairs, markets, liberties, free customs, escheats and all other things appurtenant, to have to him and his heirs in tail of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed forever, just as is more fully contained in the charter. The king commands those tenants that, once attornment has been made about their fealties, rents and other services, they are to be attendant to John according to the tenor of his charter.
