Description

Folios: 179-179v. Hampshire. Acknowledgement.

First party: Robert le Estraunge [Lestrange], knight.

Second party: Edmund, son of Henry III [Edmund of Lancaster].

Place or subject: Whereas Edmund, son of Henry III handed over to Robert, at the instance of Robert's friends, the manor of Chauton [Chalton], Hants, which Edmund gave to Robert's brother Hamo Lestrange, and which he afterwards retook into his hands on account that Robert claimed to have that manor from the gift of Hamo in Achonia, about which Edmund was not fully informed, in such a way that Robert and his heirs, on Hamo's next coming into England, was to restore the manor with appurtenances without any impediment to Hamo, provided that he wished to have it again. By the tenor of this present deed Robert acknowledged for himself and his heirs that, on the next coming of Hamo into England, he will restore that manor, or cause it to be restored, to Hamo in that form at Hamo's wish. But if Robert does not do this, he acknowledged that he is bound Edmund in £1,000 sterling, to be paid to him or his heirs or assigns within forty days after the time when he refused to make the restoration of that manor, or from the time when Edmund or his heirs requested this money by reason of that refusal.

County: [Hampshire].

Additional people: Witnesses: Robert de Tybetot; Robert de Onsford; William de Percy, clerk; Robert de Turberville; Geoffrey de Langeleye; Richard Fokeram; and Thomas de Bray.
