Description

Folios: 178-178v. Hampshire. Agreement.

First party: Thomas Walensis.

Second party: Margery de Feritate.

Place or subject: Agreement about a certain chase for Thomas's beasts. It begins at Muternam at the corner of the park and lasts as far as Margery's demesne next to the great way between Stokbrigg [Stockbridge] and Winchester towards the north-west, concerning which there was a dispute between them, namely that Margery granted Thomas, for his homage and service, that chase with the quittance from escape. To hold to Thomas and his heirs of Margery and her heirs forever, paying 18d annually at the following terms, namely a moiety at Michaelmas and the other moiety at Easter for all services, customs, complaints and demands. Thomas is to cause a certain ditch to be raised between Margery's pasture and that chase in length of that chase by the metes laid down there, and once that ditch has been raised, he and his heirs will sustain it in such a way that no damage will accrue to Margery and her heirs by the beasts of Thomas and his heirs, and they are to apply faithful care that their beasts do not make any escape in that pasture. It will be lawful for Margery and her heirs to have free ingress and egress with her demesne beasts and carts through that chase to her demesne without opposition from Thomas or his heirs.

County: [Hampshire].

Additional people: Witnesses: Stephen, then prior of Motesfount [Mottisfont]; Richard de Cardeville; William de Danmartin; Thomas de Hocton, knights; Walter Poys; Geoffrey Percevent; Walter Oyl de Beof; Ralph de la Dune; and Andrew de Hocton.
