Description

Folios: 177v-178. Hampshire. Settlement of dispute.

First party: William de Ralegh [Raleigh], parson of the church of Sumburn [King's Somborne].

Second party: [unspecified].

Place or subject: Whereas there was a dispute between Margery de Feritate and William de Ralegh in the first year in which Margery had the manor of Sumburn [King's Somborne], concerning by which and for how many beasts William's church of King's Somborne, and the parson there, are accustomed and ought to have pasture in the same manor with the demesne beasts of the lord of the same vill, at length, although otherwise in the time of Martin de Pateshull' [Pattishall], William's former lord, parson of the same church, an inquisition about this had been more fully made, it was again inquired into by many discreet and trustworthy men and found that the church and parson ought and are accustomed to have in pasture in all places with the demesne beasts of the lord of the same vill, except in two parks, twelve oxen and two cows and one free bull, which is to go wherever it wishes without custody, and 100 sheep and one wether and thirty pigs. In such a way that the parson of the church cannot have more beasts in pasture in the name of the church with the beasts of the lord than outlined above. Saving to him common of pasture in the same vill where others there have common, if he wishes to have there more beasts. It was also recognised there that the parson ought to and is accustomed to have in the wood of the lord of the same vill housebote and haybote and licence to burn by the view of the lord's forester. [Further details given].

County: [Hampshire].

Additional people: Witnesses: Stephen, prior of Motesfunt [Mottisfont]; Richard de Cardeville; Robert de Ralegh; Master William de Cerney; Walter Powis; Walter Wellebef; Robert the chaplain; and Geoffrey Percevent.
