Description

Folios: 176v-177. Hampshire. Licence.

First party: John, son of the king of England, duke of Aquitaine and Lancaster [John of Gaunt].

Second party: John Coule, chaplain, William Enderby and Walter Carpentere of Motesfonte [Mottisfont].

Place or subject: Out of reverence for God and his affection which he bears to the priory of Motesfonte [Mottisfont], which is of the foundation of his progenitors and his patronage, out of his special grace and for ten marks, which the prior paid to him, John has granted and given licence to John Coule, William Enderby and Walter Carpentere that they can give and assign one messuage with appurtenances in Strete by Stokebrugge [Stockbridge], which is held of John by the service of 12d a year to the same prior and convent there, and to Thomas Brun that a fourth part of the manor of Mershcourt [Marsh Court], which is held of John similarly by the service of 15d a year and which Robert Cholmele holds for his life from Thomas, and which after Robert's death ought to revert to Thomas, will instead remain to the prior and convent. To hold to the prior and convent and their successors in aid of their sustenance forever. And licence for the prior and convent to receive that messuage from John, William and Walter and enter and hold the fourth part after the death of Robert, to them and their successors, forever, notwithstanding the Statute of Mortmain. Saving to John and his heirs that rent and other services due and accustomed to John, and also paying to John and his heirs forever double the rent in the name of relief whenever the priory happens to be vacant by death, cession or resignation of the prior there.
