Folio: 169. Hampshire. Dispute concerning the right of presentation to the church of Cumton and Bereford.
First party: William Briwer [Brewer].
Second party: [unspecified].
Place or subject: Whereas [concerning] the church of Cumton [Compton Chamberlayne] and Bereford [Barford St Martin] by the promotion of Eustace de Facumberge [Fauconberg], who is consecrated as bishop of London and who was parson of both churches, a dispute arose between William Briwer, keeper of the land and heir of Robert the Chamberlain, and Nicholas de Haversam, with both men presenting, a diligent inquisition had been made by the bishop of Salisbury, and it was found by the lay men and clerks that the presentation of a moiety of the church of Bereford [Barford St Martin] and a moiety of the church of Cumton [Compton Chamberlayne] pertained to Nicholas de Haversam, and the custody of the land and heir of Robert the Chamberlain of the other moieties of the said churches pertained to William Briwer, in such a way that at the common presentation of the said William Briwer and Nicholas de Haversam Matthew de Stell was presented to the church of Bereford, and at the common presentation of the same men Roger Magister of Bakecor was presented to the church of Cumton [Compton Chamberlayne]. It was also agreed between the said William Briwer and Nicholas de Haversam that, when the heir of Robert the Chamberlain comes to lawful age, if he then wants to consent, that Nicholas de Haversam will then present to the whole church of Bereford [Barford St Martin], and the said heir of the said Robert the Chamberlain to the whole church of Cumton [Compton Chamberlayne]. However, if he refuses, the right and possession will remain to Nicholas de Haversam of presenting to a moiety of the church of Bereford and to a moiety of the church of Cumton [Compton Chamberlayne].
