Description

Folios: 164-164v. Berkshire. Inspeximus of a charter which Edmund, the king's brother, made to the hospital and brothers of St John of Hungerford, dated at London on 20 May, 9 Edw I.

Place or subject: Because it has been made known to Edmund, son of Henry III [Edmund of Lancaster], that Simon de Montfort, late earl of Leicester, for the salvation of his soul and of the souls of his ancestors and successors, granted to the hospital of St John of Hungerford and the brethren there forever, in order to lodge poor, weak and infirm men, that half-yardland with appurtenances which William le Broddere once held of him in villeinage in Sandone [Sandon], with a certain meadow which was of his demesne near to his pond on the north side in Hungerford, to hold to the hospital and brethren and their successors of the earl and his heirs forever in free, pure and perpetual alms quietly, entirely, peacefully with all liberties and customs, both in entries and exits and also in commons of pasture and water, Edmund, in respect of charity, has ratified and confirmed this gift and grant.
