Description

Folio: 147v. Bedfordshire. Revocation of an exemplification.

First party: Richard II.

Second party: [unspecified].

Place or subject: Whereas lately at the suit of Elizabeth, who was the wife of John de Neville of Raby, knight, suggesting to the king a certain note had been levied in the court of Edward I before the justices of the Bench in the first year of his reign, between John de Braybrok [Braybrooke], petent, and William le Latymer [Latimer], defendant, concerning the manors of Sutton and Potton with appurtenances by the king's writ, the king commanded Thomas Haxey, clerk, that, once the feet of the notes levied before the justices in that year, which are in his custody, had been searched, he is to send a copy of that note to the king under his seal. And by virtue of that writ, Thomas certified to the king that he found a certain note between the parties concerning those tenements, but whether that note was from that first year or not he could not establish. And although the king had caused the tenor of that note at Elizabeth's request to be exemplified by the king's letters patent, because, nevertheless, a great variance is had between Thomas's certification and this the king's exemplification by the excess of substantial words inserted in the same exemplification, which are not at all contained in the certification, considering that the exemplification issued unadvisedly from the king's Chancery at the wise suit of Elizabeth, and seeing that these letters are very insufficient and invalid, the king has caused them to be revoked by the tenor of these presents.
