Description

Folios: 146v-147. Bedfordshire. Writ.

First party: Edward II.

Second party: John Walewayn [Walwayn], escheator this side of the Trent.

Place or subject: Writ close of Edward II directed to his clerk, Master John Walewayn, his escheator on this side of the Trent. Because the king has heard by inquisition that Alice la Latymer [Latimer], deceased, held the manor of Sutton with the hamlets of Potton, Holme and Stratton of the king in chief from the gift of John de Kynardeseye, clerk, who granted that manor to Alice by the king's licence. To hold for the whole of the life of Alice. After her decease the manor is to remain to Nicholas le Latymere and his heirs in tail, to hold of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed forever. If Nicholas dies without heirs in tail, then after the deaths of Alice and Nicholas, the manor is to remain to Thomas, earl of Lancaster. And that the manor is held of the king in chief as of the honor of Huntyngdon [Huntingdon], being in the king's hands, by the service of a moiety of a knight's fee. The king has taken the homage of for that manor and hamlets. The king commands the esceator to deliver the manor, which he has taken into the king's hands by reason of the death of the same Alice, to Nicholas, together with the issues received by him from the time of her death.
