Description

Folios: 143v-144. Bedfordshire. Inquisition.

Place or subject: A certain inquisition taken by pretext of a writ of diem clausit extremum of Edward I and returned into his Chancery in the 33rd year of his reign, concerning the lands and tenements which William le Latymer the elder held in his demesne as of fee in Northamptonshire on the day he died, etc. The jurors say upon their oath that on the day he died William le Latymer held a moiety of the vill of Corby with the hundred of Corby, and with a certain portion in Carlton, which are of the inheritance of Alice le Latymer, his wife, of the king in chief by the service of 100s a year, to be paid at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Northamptonshire for the time being at the two terms of the year, namely one moiety at Michaelmas and the other at Easter. And there is there a moiety of a certain messuage worth 2s 6d a year. There are also eighty-four acres of arable land worth 42s a year, each acre being worth 6d. From the rent of assize of customary tenants 18s at the four main terms in equal portions. From the services and customs of the same customary tenants 77s, payable at the same terms. Pleas and perquisites of courts are worth per annum 40d. The hundred is worth 13s 4d a year. There is at Carlton [East Carlton] from the rent of assize of freeholders 12s 4d at the four main terms. At Weldon William held of Alice's inheritance a certain tenement of the master of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England by the service of 8s a year, payable at the two terms of the year to the same master at his manor of Dyngelee [Dingley] at Easter and Michaelmas, to Richard Basset 3d at Michaelmas, and to John de Camera 2¼d. at Christmas. From the rent of assize there 65s 4d a year at the four main terms. William held at Desbur' [Desborough] a certain tenement from the inheritance of Alice, his wife, from Robert Basseht and Alexander de Herlawe by the service of 6d, payable at Michaelmas, and one and a half pounds of pepper and one pound of cumin, payable at Christmas. From the rent of assize 74s 2d at the two terms, namely a moiety at Michaelmas and the other moiety at Easter. William held of the inheritance of Alice, his wife, at Ryston [Rushton] certain tenants of John de Lacy by the service of 12d at the feast of St Peter in Chains and half a pound of pepper and half a pound of cumen at Christmas. And from rents of assize per annum 29s 3d, payable at the four main terms. He also held of the inheritance of Alice, his wife, certain tenants at Braybroc [Braybrooke] and Boudon [Bowden] of the honor of Huntyngdon [Huntingdon], being in the hands of Robert le Brus, by the service of a twentieth part of a knight's fee. And from the rent of assize of freeholders 10s 6d a year, payable at the four terms. From the rent of assize of customary tenants 14s a year at those terms. William le Latymer, son of this William le Latymer, is his next heir and is aged thirty years.
