Description

Folios: 141-141v. Bedfordshire. Inquisition.

Place or subject: Inquisition taken by pretext of a certain writ of diem clausit extremum of Henry III returned in his Chancery in 55 Hen. III, made before Master R. de Clifford, escheator of the king, to inquire how much land Christiana Ledet, who is dead, held of the king in chief on the day on which she died, and how much from others, and by what service and how much those lands are worth per annum in all issues, and who the next heir is and what age he is. Upon the extent of the manor of Wardon [Chipping Warden]. The jurors say that Christiana held on the day she died the manor of Wardon [Chipping Warden] of the king in chief and pays 20s a year to the castle of Rokingh' [Rockingham] and scutage when it falls in. And there are there in demesne three carucates of land which are worth £9 a year. Item, the service of freeholders and cottagers and burgesses, 30s a year. They also say that there are there eighteen yardlands of customary tenants, each of which is worth one mark a year. There are two watermills there worth 4 marks a year, and one dovecote 2s a year, and a garden and curtilage are worth 2s a year. The hundred is worth 20s a year. And that Henry de Braibrok [Braybrooke] married Christiana Ledet and begot Wischard as his first-born son, who succeeded him, and John Wischard begot Walter. Walter begot two daughters, who are of full age, and, as they think, are the right and next heirs of Christiana.
