Description

Folios: 132v-133. Northamptonshire. Indenture.

First party: Thomas, earl of Lancaster and Leicester, steward of England.

Second party: John Syward.

Place or subject: John has enfeoffed the earl of his manor of Chelveston with appurtenances in demesne and in service without any reservation between this day and the feast-day of Hilary next after the completion of this deed, and delivered seisin fully of that manor to the earl. To hold to the earl and his heirs and assigns. Upon the delivery of such seisin to John there is to be a payment of 100 marks sterling. John grants that he is bound to the earl in £500 sterling to be paid at Higham Ferrers at Easter next following without further delay. And the earl grants that he will reenfeoff John of the said manor of Chelveston, etc., to hold to him for the whole of his life of the earl and his heirs, paying to the earl and his heirs one rose at the feast of St John the Baptist yearly for all services. After John's death, the manor is to return to the earl or his heirs quit from John's heirs. If it happens that the earl does not reenfeoff John thereof within this time, the earl grants that he is bound to John in £500, to be paid at Hegham Ferrers [Higham Ferrers] at that Easter without further delay.
