First party: Henry, duke of Lancaster, earl of Derby, Lincoln and Leicester, and steward of England.
Second party: William Gent of Newcastle under Lyme.
Place or subject: The whole of that place of land lying in le Castelcliff and next to Wolstanton, both from old assart and also from new, as it extends in length from le Derneclough on the south side as far as the field called le Newelond on the north side. And it extends in width between the assart of Richard de Fenton and le Panokkeslone on the west side as far as le Parsoneshey and the land formerly of Ralph Swanyld on the east side at the lower end of the same place of land. And at the upper end in width it extends from Whatecroft and le Honicroftes of Wolstanton on the west side as far as the watercourse called le Foulhee and the land of Nicholas Collemare on the east side, with two acres of land enclosed within le Newelond, which lands Richard de Dymmesdale lately held there, and which same place of land contains fifty acres in total. To hold the whole plot of land with all profits and commodities which can be found there in any way, with free entrance and exit with carriage and all things necessary for William within the wood and beyond the field called le Kyngesfeld as far as the vill of Newcastle [Newcastle under Lyme]. The duke also granted William that he and his heirs can have and hold this plot of land in severalty at all times of the year without the impediment or opposition of anyone, paying to the duke and his heirs 26s 7d yearly at the four terms of the year for all services except for two appearances a year at the duke's great court there. And if it happens the rent falls into arrears, in part or in total, after any of the terms by ten weeks, then it will be lawful for the duke and his heirs to enter and retain that plot of land without impediment or challenge from William, his heirs or assigns forever.
