Description

Folios: 88v-89. Staffordshire. Grant.

First party: The mayor and commonalty of the borough of Newcastle under Lyme.

Second party: Edmund, son of Henry III [Edmund of Lancaster].

Place or subject: Whereas the mayor and commonalty claim to hold this borough at fee farm, paying forty marks a year, Edmund, son of Henry III had said and understood that they have no right to hold it at fee farm but only at his will. And upon this a dispute had arisen, the mayor and commonalty, renouncing the right of anyone in this regard, have granted for themselves and their heirs that Edmund and his heirs are to have and hold the borough with a fair at the feast of St Giles, markets, tolls, perquisites of courts, ancient farms of burgages, guildhall, ovens, stalls and other things appurtenant to the lord of the borough in any way. Edmund and his heirs are henceforth to ordain and dispose thereof at his will as if of his right, saving to the mayor and commonalty and their heirs all liberties granted to them by charters of Henry III and Edward I.

County: [Staffordshire].

Additional people: Witnesses: Walter de Helyon; Roger Brabanzonis; William Wyther; William de Estafford; Robert de Pype [Pipe]; Richard de Draycote; Robert de Estafford, knights; Walter de Rading' [Reading]; and Roger Brabanzonis, clerks.
