Description

Folio: 85. Staffordshire. Grant.

First party: Robert Steffordie.

Second party: Roger de la Leghe, his man.

Place or subject: A certain part of Robert's wood of Greatwude. The grant is made in fee and inheritance for Roger's service and for 10s of silver, which Roger gave to Robert on entry, and for one horse 'ferrant' which Robert gave to Robert. his son, when he first returned from Normandy. To hold of Robert and his heirs completely free, absolute and quit from pannage and from all service pertaining to Robert and his heirs for 3s of yearly rent, in such a way that in the first three years he is to pay only 12d each year. After this he and his heirs are to pay 3s a year, a moiety at the Annunciation of St Mary and the other moiety at Michaelmas, concerning which a dispute has arisen between Roger and Robert's ministers, and Robert ordered the boundaries to be established in this his present charter. Namely, on the one side of the great way which goes from la Hida [Hyde Lea] to Billintun [Billington], as far as Bucchebeche; from Bucceb' along the ancient and great ditch as far as Ruge Cave; from la Rugere by the way which goes to the hedge, by which Roger's assart is enclosed. And so from the same hedge, which is on the other side of the way, down to the great way which goes to Billintun [Billington].
