Description

Folios: 82v-83. Derbyshire. Grant.

First party: Thomas, earl of Lancaster and Leicester, steward of England.

Second party: Robert Gunter and Robert, his son.

Place or subject: The earl granted to Robert Gunter and Joan, his wife, by his charter 100 acres of land from his waste in his forest of Duffeld [Duffield] for the term of their two lives. The earl has increased the grant and added forty acres of his waste for the term of life. Which 100 acres lie together in a place called le Hulhay and le Dympel, and the forty acres lie between Morleyweye and the earl's park of le Posterne. After the seisin of these lands returned into the earl's hands, he gave them to Robert Gunter and Robert, his son, those 100 acres being from the lands of the earl's waste with the buildings in his forest of Duffield, of which 100 lie together in one place called Hulhay and le Dympel and extend in length from the earl's park from the Posterne to Morleweye, and in width from the field of Haselwode [Hazelwood] to that forest. And twenty acres lie in Howelmor in length between the assart of Nicholas de Hungerforde and the field of Duffield, and in width between the vill of Hazelwood and Dirielleclif. To hold to Robert Gunter and Robert, his son, for their two lives freely and quietly, well and in peace, with all franchises, free customs and easements, with housebote and haybote in the ward of Duffield, paying to the earl and his heirs one rose at the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist for all services and secular demands. [Further details given]. After their deaths, those 140 acres are to return to the earl and his heirs.
