Folios: 81v-82. Derbyshire. Inquisition.
First party: William le Blount, steward of the honor of Tuttebur' [Tutbury].
Second party: John de Hambury, his lieutenant in the same honor.
Place or subject: William received a mandate of Henry, earl of Lancaster and Leicester, steward of England, as follows: The heirs of Wildegos have shown by their petition that they and their ancestors have long held the bailiwick of Appeltr' [Appletree], paying half a mark a year, as appears by a charter of Earl Ferrers. William therefore commands John to inquire into that charge of two marks. The mandate is dated at the manor of Somburn [King's Somborne] on 27 Dec. By virtue of which mandate an inquisition was taken. The jurors say upon their oath that Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby, gave to Robert, son of Gerard Wildegos of Foston, for his homage and service, the whole bailiwick of the hundred of Appletree and Sutton by charter. To hold of the earl and his heirs to Robert and his heirs in tail, paying to the earl and his heirs half a mark at the feast of the Assumption of St Mary. They also say that Robert, son of Gerard Wildegos, being so seised of that bailiwick, held it for a long time by that service, and he had a certain son and heir called William and he died. By reason of the minority of the same William, son of Robert, that bailiwick was seized into the hands of Edmund, then Earl Ferrers, and by William Wyther, his steward, and the bailiwick remained thus. And afterwards there came Roger Wildegos, uncle of the same William, son of Robert Wildegos, and he sought to be admitted to the bailiwick as next of kin of the same William. And before he could be admitted to it, Roger gave 20s to Earl Edmund, and so he held the bailiwick until the full age of the same William, paying those 20s a year, and similarly half a mark contained in the charter of Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby. And he increased the farm of that bailiwick every year of 20s. And afterwards William, as soon as he came of his full age, brought a suit for remedy at the court of Thomas, earl of Lancaster and lord of Ferrers, and he had issue called Richard, and before he could have the remedy, he died, and so the bailiwick remained charged with 20s and still is now.
