Folios: 75-75v. Derbyshire. Grant.
First party: King John.
Second party: Richard Briwerre, son of William Briwerre.
Place or subject: The king's manor of Cestrefeld [Chesterfield] with Bruminton [Brimington] and Witinton [Whittington], and the soke and the whole wapentake of Shcarvedale [Scarsdale], with all appurtenances. To hold at fee farm to Richard and his heirs, paying £69 yearly for Cestrefeld [Chesterfield], Bruminton [Brimington] and Witinton [Whittington] and the soke, and £10 from the at the Exchequer of Westminster, namely a moiety at Easter and a moiety at Michaelmas. He is to have the manor of Chesterfield and the same liberties and free customs which the king's borough of Notingham [Nottingham] has in all places and things, in such a way as the boroughs of Nottingham and Derby have and ought to have their liberties. Chesterfield is to be a free borough, and no burgess or merchant in it or in that wapentake or soke is to have liberties or free customs except by Richard Briwerre or his heirs, except for those who previously had liberties there. Richard and his heirs are to have at Chesterfield one fair every single year on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross to last for eight days, and also one market there every week for two days, namely on Wednesday and Saturday, with all liberties and free customs pertaining to the fair and market. And a toll is to be taken in this market and fair from all those who do not have liberties. The king also grants to Richard and his heirs the manor of Snodinton [Snoddington], Notts, to hold at fee farm, paying £8 a year at the Exchequer at the same terms. This grant is made with the will, assent and at the petition of William Briwerr, Richard's father, to whom the king previously granted the same things. To hold all these tenements with all liberties at fee farm by the same farm and by the service of two parts of one knight's fee for all service and demand, as well and in peace, freely and quietly, entirely, fully and honourably as the king and his ancestors ever had them, free and quit from shire-courts, hundred-courts and wapentakes and their suits and from all pleas and complaints and exactions, except those things which pertain to the crown.
