Folios: 57-57v. Leicestershire. Obligation.
First party: John, abbot of the monastery of St Mary of Suleby [Sulby], and the convent of that monastery, with the consent of their chapter.
Second party: Thomas, earl of Lancaster, and Roger le Brabanzoun of Mousele [Mowsley], knights.
Place or subject: The abbot and convent bind themselves to the earl and Roger in celebrating one mass for the deceased on every single day of the year in their monastery for the souls of Edmund, late earl of Leicester, father of Thomas, and Lady Blanche, late queen of Navarre, mother of Thomas, now deceased, and for the soul of Thomas when he dies forever, except on days on which this service is not celebrated. They also bind themselves in celebrating one full service for the deceased every single week of the year forever in their convent for the souls of Edmund and Lady Blanche, now deceased, and for the soul of Thomas when he dies, namely both in celebrating a mass and also saying a placebo, dirge and commendation, except in the weeks of Christmas, Easter and Pentecost, in which the service of the deceased is not celebrated in the convent. They also grant that they will insert anniversary days of the obit of Edmund and Blanche, and an anniversary day of Thomas when he dies in their book of obits, to be recited every single year in their chapter, and that they and their successors will celebrate forever on the same anniversary days for their souls one special service of the deceased with the ringing of bells and all other solemnity, which is fitting. Towards performing such service of the deceased faithfully, the abbot and convent bind themselves and their successors and all the lands and tenements which they have in Borisworth [Husbands Bosworth] and Sybertoft [Sibbertoft], to the distraint of Thomas and Roger and their heirs jointly and separately forever. If there is any doubt as to whether such service is being performed or not, before any distraint or harm is done by them or their heirs to the abbot and convent or their successors, upon having the truth thereof, etc., the oath of the abbot, prior and sub-prior of that monastery for the time being is to be taken, and it is not to be proceeded to any distraint or harm. For which celebration of such service, Thomas and Roger gave and quitclaimed to the abbot and convent £88 sterling, which the abbot and convent received from the goods of Lady Blanche by the hands of this Roger le Brabanzoun, knight.
