Folios: 46v-47. Leicestershire. Covenant.
First party: Simon de Montfort, earl of Leicester.
Second party: Stephen de Segrave [Seagrave].
Place or subject: Stephen quitclaimed to the earl whatever he had in the vills of Thornton and Baggeworth [Bagworth] with appurtenances without any reservation. To hold to the earl and his heirs forever in demesne, in such a way that the earl is to make satisfaction to Henry Pipard for the service of a third part of one knight's fee, which Stephen was bound to do for the vill of Thornton, or making to him an exchange or allowing in acquittance what he owes to the earl from his other tenements, which he holds at Henry's will. But Stephen and his heirs are to pay every single year to Henry and his heirs, by his hand, 20s due to him from that vill of Thornton. For this grant the earl granted to Stephen the vill of Sicleby [Sileby] with the advowson of the church and with all other appurtenances, and whatever he had in the vill of Thirneby [Thurnby] with appurtenances from the land which was of Richard, son of Robert de Harecurt, to hold to Stephen and his heirs from the earl and his heirs, doing the service to them which Richard was bound to do for such land. If they cannot warrant them or if Richard's heirs recover those lands, the earl or his heirs are to hand over immediately without difficulty and delay to Stephen and his heirs £15 of land in Baggeworthe [Bagworth] and the land with appurtenances in Thornton in the state in which he received it. If the earl or his heirs place anything, in addition, in amending that land by buildings or any other things which fall to Stephen and his heirs as a benefit, they are to refund to the earl or his heirs the expenses made in this. The earl also granted that, if it happens at any time the king or his heirs hold in their hands the land of the earl, and the king or his heirs wish to hand over to Richard's heirs those tenements of Sycleby [Sileby] and Thirneby [Thurnby], it will be well lawful for the king or his heirs without injury of anyone to first hand over to Stephen and his heirs that land of Thornton and £15 of land in Bagworth.
County: [Leicestershire].
