Description

Folios: 45-45v. Leicestershire. Grant.

First party: Edward I.

Second party: Edmund, the king's brother [Edmund of Lancaster].

Place or subject: Whereas Edward, the king's brother, holds from the grant of Henry III the castle, vill and honor of Leycestre [Leicester], lands and tenements of the same honor with all appurtenances, which were of Simon de Montfort, late earl of Leicester, and all the lands and tenements which Simon held of any lords, as fully and freely as Simon ever held them in his life, and certain debts were exacted from Edmund, in which Simon was bound for himself and his ancestors to the king and his ancestors at the Exchequer on the day on which he died by summons of the same Exchequer, the king, wishing to show special favour to his brother, grants that his brother and his heirs in tail are to be quit forever of all debts, fines, amercements, accounts, reckonings and all kinds of arrears which are exacted or could be exacted from him by reason of that castle, vill, honor, lands and tenements from the time of Simon and his ancestors. Saving to the king and his heirs the recovery thereof, if the castle, vill and honor, lands and tenements happen to pass into the lands of anyone other than those of Edmund or his heirs in tail.
