Description

Folios: 36v-37. Lincolnshire. Indenture.

First party: John, duke of Lancaster [John of Gaunt].

Second party: William de Mountagu [Montagu], earl of Salisbury.

Place or subject: Whereas John, duke of Lancaster, is bound to William de Montagu, earl of Salisbury, in £2,000 by one bond, and the earl is bound to the duke in another sum by another bond, the duke and Blanche, his wife, are to have a fine, etc, from the earl for the right, release and quitclaim without warranty of all the manors and others lands, tenements, rents, services and advowsons which are in the possession of the earl of Salisbury in Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset, except for the manors of Troubrigg' [Trowbridge] and Aldeburn [Aldbourne]. By charter of licence of the king, the earl acquired from the duke and Blanche and her heirs a rent of £200, to be taken from the manor of Martok [Martock], Som. For all the time that the duke and Blanche, their heirs or assigns enjoy the manors of Troubrigg [Trowbridge] and Aldeburn [Aldbourne], etc, the payment of the rent is to cease, etc. And if it happens the earl or his heirs recover the manors of Troubrigg [Trowbridge] and Aldeburn [Aldbourne] or any parcel thereof by judgement, the rent of £200 is to be paid yearly to the duke and Blanche and their heirs at Michaelmas and Easter in equal portions, and that it will be lawful for the duke and Blanche and her heirs to distrain in the same manor for the rent, etc. [Further details given].
