Description

Folios: 26-26v. Lincolnshire. Inspeximus by Edward III at the request of John, duke of Lancaster, his son [John of Gaunt], of: 1 Letters patent of Edward II, dated at Beverley on 3 Jan 12 Edw II 2 Other letters patent made by Edward II, dated at York on 15 Mar 12 Edw II.

First party: Edward III.

Second party: John, duke of Lancaster, the king's son.

Place or subject: Edward II granted licence to his kinsman Thomas, earl of Lancaster, that he might give and grant from his lands which he holds of the king in chief in Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, to John de Warenne, earl of Surrey, 1,000 marks of land and rent with appurtenances per annum. By the other letters patent, Edward granted licence to Thomas that he might give and grant from his lands which he holds of the king in chief in Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, to John de Warenne, earl of Surrey, 1,000 marks of land and rent per annum with appurtenances. By virtue of the licence, the earl of Lancaster granted to the earl of Surrey manors to the value of 1,000 marks of land and rent per annum, namely the manors of Shapwyk [Shapwick] and Craneford [Canford], Dorset, the hundred of Hokeden, Dorset, the manors of Henstr' [Henstridge] and Cherleton [Charlton Horethorne], Somerset; the manors of Troubrigg [Trowbridge], Wynterburn [Winterbourne], Aumbresbury [Amesbury] and Aldeburn [Aldbourne], Wiltshire, the hundreds of Aldwardebur' [Alderbury] and Aumbresbur' [Amesbury], Wiltshire; and the manor of Ardyngton [Ardington], Berkshire, and 60s 6d of rent in Hungerford, which are held of the king in chief, for the whole of the life of the earl of Surrey. To hold to the earl of Surrey for the whole of his life and that he can receive those 1,000 marks of land and rent from the earl of Lancaster and hold them for the whole of his life.
