Description

Folios: 25v-26. Lincolnshire. Grant.

First party: Thomas, earl of Lancaster and Leicester, steward of England.

Second party: John de Gareyne [Warenne], earl of Surrey.

Place or subject: 1,000 marks of land and rent in the counties of Somerset, Dorset, Berkshire and Wiltshire, namely the manors of Aldebourn [Aldbourne], Wynturburn [Winterbourne], Ambresburi [Amesbury] and Troubrigge [Trowbridge], Wiltshire; Caneforde [Canford] and Sapwich [Shapwick], Dorset; Henstrugge [Henstridge] and Cherleton [Charlton Horethorne], Somerset; the manor of Ardyngton [Ardington] and 60s 6d of rent in the vill of Hungreford [Hungerford], Berkshire, received yearly by Lady Emeline Longespee for the term of her life from the rent, which she holds from the earl of Lancaster in the vill and mills of Hungerford. After the death of Lady Emeline John is to receive that 60s 6d of rent from the mills of Hungerford, to hold those manors and rent with appurtenances for the whole of his life, paying one rose at the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist for all services and doing the services due and accustomed to the chief lords of the fee, saving to the earl and his heirs all knights' fees in those counties, the foreign courts of those fees, namely the foreign courts of Tonbrugge, Shireveston and Lokynton, and the court of Durle in those counties, the advowson of the abbey of Lakoke [Lacock] and of the priory of Bradenestoke [Bradenstoke], Wiltshire. [Further details given]. After the death of John de Gareine [Warenne], earl of Surrey, all those manors and rent are to return entirely to the earl of Lancaster and his heirs.
