First party: Edward III.

Second party: Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln and constable of Chester.

Place or subject: Whereas Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln and constable of Chester, lately quitclaimed to the king by his charter the castle, vill and honor of Pontefract with all appurtenances, except for the manor of Thoresby, Lincolnshire, to hold of the king and his heirs or assigns with knights' fees, advowsons of chapels, abbeys, priories, hospitals, homages, services of freeholders and villeins, demesne lands, chases, forests, parks, warrens, fishponds, cow-pastures, manors, hamlets and members, and also with the lands and tenements which Alice de Lacy, his mother, holds in dower of that honor, when they fall in, and with all things pertaining to that castle, vill and honor in any counties, just as in the charter of the earl is more fully contained. The king grants the castle, vill and honor with appurtenances to the earl without any reservation. To hold to the earl and his heirs in tail of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed before they were handed over forever, as freely, entirely, quietly and honourably in all rights, lordships, royalties, liberties and free customs without any increment or decrement, together with knights' fees, advowsons of churches, chapels, abbeys, priories, hospitals, homages, services, freeholders and villeins, demesnes lands, chases, forests, parks, warrens, fishponds, cow-pastures, manors, hamlets and members, and also with all the lands and tenements which Alice holds in dower of that honor, as the earl held all of them on the day on which he handed them over into the king's hands, without any reservation. If the earl dies without heirs in tail, then after his death, the premises are to remain forever to Edmund, the king's brother [Edmund of Lancaster] and his heirs in tail.
