Description

Folios: 22-22v. Lincolnshire. Grant.

First party: Edward I.

Second party: Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln and constable of Chester, and Margaret his wife, countess of Lincoln.

Place or subject: Whereas Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln and constable of Chester, and Margaret, his wife, countess of Lincoln, have lately quitclaimed to the king for themselves and her heirs the manor of Sutton [Long Sutton], Lincolnshire, which was of her inheritance, to hold to the king and his heirs, together with knights' fees, advowsons of the churches, homages, services of freeholders and villeins, liberties, free customs and all other things pertaining to the manor forever, the king, at the instance of the earl and countess, grants them that manor with all appurtenances. To hold to the earl and countess during their whole lives of the king and his heirs by the services due and accustomed, freely and quietly, together with knights' fees, advowsons of churches, homages, services of freeholders and villeins, liberties, free customs and all other things, which the earl and countess had before handing them over, in the same manor and fees without any reservation, increment or decrement. After their deaths the manor with appurtenances are to entirely remain to Thomas, son of Edmund, the king's brother [Thomas of Lancaster], and Alice, his wife, daughter of the earl and countess, and their heirs in tail forever. And if Thomas and Alice die without heirs in tail, then the manor with appurtenances is to entirely remain to his other heirs forever.
