Place or subject: Whereas Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln and constable of Chester, has lately quitclaimed to the king all the castles, lands and tenements which hel had in the counties of Lancashire and Cheshire, and also the manor of Kyngeston [Kingston Lacy], Dorset, and similarly granted that the manor of Slaykeburn [Slaidburn] in Bouland [Bowland] with the whole forest and chase and also the manor of Snayth [Snaith] with soke in Yorkshire, and all other lands and tenements which Alice de Lacy, his mother, holds in dower in Lancashire of his inheritance, which after her death ought to revert to him and his heirs, are to revert and remain to the king and his heirs forever after her death, and of which lands and tenements which Alice holds in dower, she, by assignment of the earl, made an oath of fealty to the king. To hold to the king and his heirs with knights' fees, advowsons of churches, chapels, abbeys, priories and hospitals, homages, services of freeholders and villeins, demesne lands, forests, chases, parks, warrens, fishings, cow-pastures, manors, hamlets and members, hundreds, wapentakes, liberties, royalties and free customs and all other things which the earl and Alice had before that handing over and assignment in Lancashire and Cheshire, without any reservation forever. The king, for the laudable service which the earl has given to the king, granted him all those castles, lands and tenements in Lancashire and Cheshire, and also the manor of Kyngeston [Kingston Lacy], Dorset. The king also grants that the manor of Slaykeburn [Slaidburn] in Bouland [Bowland] with the whole forest and chase, and the manor of Snayth [Snaith] with soke in Yorkshire, and also all other lands and tenements which Alice holds of the king in dower in Lancashire by assignment of the earl, and which after her death ought to revert to the king and his heirs after her death, are to entirely revert and remain to the earl and his heirs in tail. To hold to the earl and his heirs in tail of the chief lords of the fee or the king or others by the due and accustomed services, freely and quietly, with all knights' fees and other liberties, as above, without any reservation, increment or decrement forever. If the earl dies without heirs in tail, then after his death and that of his heirs, all the premises are to remain entirely to Edmund the king's brother [Edmund of Lancaster] and his heirs forever. The king orders that the earl and his heirs are to have and hold in tail forever all those castles, lands and tenements in Lancashire and Cheshire, and also the manor of Kyngeston [Kingston Lacy], Dorset. The king similarly grants that the manor of Slaykeburn [Slaidburn] in Bouland [Bowland] with the whole forest and chase and the manor of Snayth [Snaith] with soke in Yorkshire, and also all other lands and tenements which Alice holds of the king in dower in Lancashire by assignment of the earl, and which after her death ought to revert to the king and his heirs, after her death are to entirely revert and remain to the earl in tail of the chief lord of that fee or us or others by the services due and accustomed, freely and quietly, with all the liberties, etc. If the earl dies without heirs in tail, then after his death the premises are to enirely remain to Edmund the king's brother and his heirs forever.
