Folio: 17. Derby; Ferrers. Obligation of Robert de Ferrers made to his mainpernors.

First party: Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby.

Second party: Henry, son of the king of the Romans [Henry of Almain], William de Valencia [Valence], earl of Penebrok [Pembroke], John de Warenne, earl of Surrey, William de Bello Campo [Beauchamp], earl of Warewik [Warwick]; Roger de Somer'; Thomas de Clare; Robert Walerand; Roger de Clifford; Hamo Lestrange (extraneus), Bartholomew de Suthleg'; and Robert de Briwes, knights.

Place or subject: Whereas Henry and the others, at the instance of Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby, bound themselves and their heirs, together with all their lands and tenements, to Edmund, son of Henry III [Edmund of Lancaster], and for the earl mainperned for paying to Edmund £50,000 sterling for the earl's ransom and that of his lands in the quindene of St John Baptist next to come in 53 Hen. III, the earl, hearing that he cannot make sufficient provision at present for the indemnity of his mainpernors, unless by the handing over of all his lands and tenements which the king and Edmund, his son, handed over to the earl upon his delivery from prison. And the earl, wishing to look out for their security in this regard and to observe them as indemnified in all things, has handed over and committed all his lands and tenements with appurtenances to his mainpernors. To hold to them and their heirs until full satisfaction has been made to the said Edmund or his heirs about the said redemption.
