Description

Folio: 10v. Derby; Ferrers. Assignment of lands.

First party: Henry de Alemann' [Henry of Almain]; William de Valence, earl of Pembroke; John de Warenne, earl of Surrey; William de Bello Campo [Beauchamp], earl of Warwick; Roger de Somery; Thomas de Clare; Robert Walraund; Roger de Clifford; Hamo Lestrange (extraneus); Bartholomew de Suthleg'; and Robert de Briwes.

Second party: Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby.

Place or subject: Henry and the others have mainperned for the earl at his request that he should pay for the redemption of his lands and tenements to Edmund, son of Henry III [Edmund of Lancaster], £50,000 in the quindene of the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, 53 Hen. III. And the earl, for their indemnit,y handed over to them all his hands and tenements in this form, that, if he does not pay this sum of money to Edmund at the said term or otherwise make satisfaction to him, then it will be lawful for them to hand over and assign all his lands and tenements to Edmund. To hold freely and quietly until the earl has paid the whole sum of £50,000 at the same time and once. And whereas the earl has not paid that sum of money to Edmund in the term now past, or made satisfaction to him otherwise, Henry and the others in the presence of the king and magnates of his council, have handed over and assigned all those lands and tenements to Edmund. To hold to him and his heirs or assigns together with the dower of Lady Margaret, mother of the earl, when it falls in, until the earl or his heirs have paid to Edmund or his heirs the whole sum at the same time and once.
