The Admiralty Gunnery Establishment (AGE) began as the Fire Control Group of the Admiralty Research Laboratory (ARL) at Teddington. The term "fire control" in Naval circles is always applied to the control of gunfire: the correct terminology with regard to "fire" as applicable to a "conflagration" or "blaze" is "fire fighting". It became a separate establishment in 1943 under the control of the Director, Naval Ordnance. AGE assumed responsibility for both Army and Navy fire control work. It remained at Teddington until 1954 when it moved to a new site on Portland Bill with new buildings and test facilities. AGE closed in 1959 and its functions were dispersed to the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment (ASWE) at Portsdown Hill and the Armament Research and Development (ARDE) at Fort Halstead.
