Description

Folios 376-385. [Folios 376-384] Copy of a letter from d'Avaux; Count D'Avaux] to the French King, dated 21 November 1696, seeking to dispel false reports that he had declared that Louis XIV was ready to negotiate the peace in Germany, Stockholm or anywhere of the Swedish King's choosing; refers to Guldenstolp's [Gyldenstolpe, Nils (1642-1709); Swedish ambassador at The Hague] advice in this matter and further discussion with him of other complications to progressing peace negotiations, and indications he has received that the Prince of Orange is not committed to peace, rather seeking to draw all that he could out of France before finding a way not to conclude it. d'Avaux reports that Oxenstirn[a] [Swedish Foreign Minister] said only three days ago to Count Jean Steinbock [Count Magnus Stenbock, Swedish Royal Councillor] that the Prince of Orange had found the necessary funds in England to proceed with the next campaign, that it would be ill advised to think of peace, that he would be more powerfully armed than ever before and would gain an advantage that would force the French King to make peace on the conditions desired by the Allies; Oxenstirn had gone on to say that King Louis had not desired peace in good faith. Count Stenbock responded quite strongly to make him understand the falseness of his reasoning; the other senators were also of a contrary sentiment to that of Oxenstirn. The Swedish King will provide neither troops nor money to Prince Jacques in Poland, only a simple letter of recommendation; the Polish Minister told d'Avaux that this was all it would take to ensure Prince Jacques would be excluded from consideration for the crown. Discussion of military movements related to the troops of the Duke of Gottorp in Luneburg. [Folios 384-385] Copy of a letter from d'Avaux to de Torcy [Colbert, Jean-Baptiste, Marquis de Torcy] regarding the partiality of Oxenstirn.
