Description

Folios 368-371. [Folios 368-369] Copy of a letter from Mignon [ Charles Mignon, French commissioner of foreign affairs] to d'Avaux regarding Monsieur [François] de Callieres's [special envoy of France] reaction to the appointment of two plenipotentiaries as his superiors in the peace negotiations as he had hoped to conclude the general peace himself. Mignon had expressed his doubts that peace could be concluded that quickly, with the real intent of the Empire and the Prince of Orange to conclude a peace being questionable. As to the Prince of Orange, Mignon considers that if the Prince of Orange could find the necessary funds he would continue the war; there is no doubt that the Parliament would grant him the funds he asked for, but raising them would be more difficult. Refers to recent trips by the Prince of Orange to take stock (to Cleves under the pretext of wishing to marry the Princess of Brandenburg, and to hunt in Loo with the Duke of Zell). Notes in this context the Treaty the Prince of Orange and the States General made with the King of Denmark - as to the latter, Mignon considers that he can only emerge from this false step with honour by saying it was a necessary precaution against the King of Sweden, who would not have hesitated following a general peace to join with the Duke of [Holstein-] Gottorp to make war against him. [Folios 370-371] Copy of a letter from Monsieur de Pomponne [Simon Arnauld, Marquis de Pomponne] to Bordy [Monsieur Bordy, secretary to Bonrepaus], dated 11 November 1696, regarding the conflicting reports on a Treaty between Denmark, England and the States General and the French King's continuing suspicion which has resulted in the suspension of the latest subsidy payment until the position is made clear..
