Folios 344-347. Copy of a letter from d'Avaux [Jean-Antoine de Mesmes, called d'Avaux (1640-1709)?] to [the French King?] regarding Lilienrodt's [Niels, Baron of Lilliënrot, Swedish diplomat] reports, in which he had given to understand that the French King had positively promised to cede Strasbourg and Luxembourg. d'Avaux had explained that the negotiations he had undertaken there were the same, albeit conceived in different terms, and that they were much more advantageous and glorious for the King of Sweden. They seemed satisfied and further efforts by the Allies and Oxenstirn [Count Bengt Gabrielsson Oxenstierna, Swedish Foreign Minister] to persuade the Swedish King otherwise were unsuccessful, meeting with strong push pack. The numerous conflicting reports circulating had prevented the Swedish King from taking any decisions. Refers to the Italian neutrality treaty and remarks that none of the Allies appears as mortified by this development as Oxenstirn, who could not stop himself from commenting that the Duke of Savoy would not attract much glory in that affair, noting his surprise that Oxenstirn should so openly display his sentiments in favour of the Allies. Reports that so far no Prince has addressed himself to the King of Sweden regarding the Polish crown other than Prince Jacques [James Louis Henry Sobieski?], but he understands that the latter is so poorly thought of in Poland [est si mal en Pologne] that the offices of the King of Sweden will be useless to him. d'Avaux has even been assured that the King of Sweden has little correspondence in that Kingdom, thus affecting his ability to do any good in this regard. He will seek to find out more about what the King of Sweden is capable of achieving in Poland; he will not explain to anyone the intentions of the French King for the Prince de Conti until appropriate.
