Description

Folios 300-303. d'Avaux [ [Jean-Antoine de Mesmes, called d'Avaux (1640-1709)?] ] to the French King, reporting the latest developments in peace negotiations, noting that van Heckeren has been reprimanded by his masters for having joined himself to Starenberg and having produced a certain memorandum without orders. Van Heckeren had declared to Oxenstirn [Count Bengt Gabrielsson Oxenstierna, Swedish Foreign Minister] a few days ago that the Prince of Orange and the States General were willing to recognise the mediation of the King of Sweden, but were awaiting confirmation of their allies position from Starenberg; since then word has come from Vienna that the Emperor also wishes to accept the mediation of the King of Sweden but with certain preconditions which the King of Sweden absolutely refused. He understands that the Emperor has sent a further demand, this for the King of France to declare what he intends for Lorraine, but d'Avaux is assured that the King of Sweden will not entertain this demand any more than the last. All these intrigues have served only to open the King of Sweden's eyes to the lack of rectitude and sincerity in the conduct of the Allies. The mediation of the King of Sweden will end up being accepted, but much more will depend on the mediators chosen and the Allies are doing all they can to influence those that they judge likely candidates. It is thought that d'Alberg will refuse and that the King could choose Guldenbourg or Boude. Indications are that the King of Sweden will not propose a location for the assembly until after his mediation is accepted, but once it is he is likely to propose Hambourg or Bremen. The Polish envoy has finally arrived, having travelled via Copenhagen which displeases those in Stockholm.
