Description

Folios 295-298. Copy of a letter from Meyercron [Henning Meyer de Meyercron, Danish ambassador to France?] to the King of Denmark. Remarks the offer made by Callieres [François de Callières, special envoy of France] for France to return certain places is not contradicted there, but that the explanations provided are different to the reports from Holland (for Strasbourg it seems more to do with security than religion). As to Lorraine and the 10 locations in Alsace demanded by the Emperor, France's position appears far removed claiming there is no mention of their restitution in the Peace of Nijmegen, that there would be no end if all prior treaties had to be recalled and that it would no longer be a questions of concluding a peace on the basis of the Nijmegen as it was supposed to be. Discusses Aix-la-Chappelle as a the location for the Congress proposed by the Emperor, but to which France would be reluctant to agree. Despite hopes for peace there, fundraising continues. He has just learned by a letter of 27 September that despite the Siege of Valence, the Marquis de St Thomas is negotiating a plan for Italian neutrality, the Emperor's approval for which is awaited. 3 days ago Marshall Boufflers was sent back to the army with orders no doubt on the same topic. It is thought that if Valence does not surrender or is not in a position to do so soon, then the neutrality should be agreed, but if it should surrender or be in the point of doing so, then France would not want to have gone to so much expense in vain and would seek to keep Valence until a General Peace.
