Prisoner name: Thomas Hyde aged 18.
Court and Date of Trial: Stafford [Staffordshire] Quarter Sessions January 1848.
Crime: Stealing rope.
Initial sentence: Ten years' transportation.
Gaoler's Report: Twice convicted and once before in prison. On Stirling Castle.
Outcome: Refuse informing the petitioners that they have been deceived as the prisoner has been twice convicted. Nil.
Petitions and letters: Two petitions from the prisoner, one from Wakefield prison and the other from Milbank Penitentiary, pleading that he was led astray by bad company, contrite, and asking to remain in the country; petition by 45 inhabitants of Wolverhampton Staffordshire pleading prisoner's previous good character and asking for his release as three years' imprisonment has been sufficient punishment to deter him from associating with bad individuals; letter on behalf of the Secretary of State for the Home Office advising that there are no sufficient grounds to interfere with the sentence addressed to Reverend John Davids, Rector of St Marks Wolverhampton; letter from Reverend Alexander Baring Gould, vicar of St Marks advising that he opened the letter and forwarded it on.
