Administrative / biographical background

The Underwater Detection Establishment established in 1947, had its origins in the ASDIC Research and Development Unit at Portland (1927-1940) and the Anti-Submarine Experimental Establishment at Fairlie (1940-1947). Situated at Portland it was responsible for research into underwater detection and communications. In 1960 it was absorbed into the Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment.
